The Gerund (ing-form)

THE GERUND
The Gerund is a verb used as a noun.

Main uses

(1) At the beginning of a sentence (as a subject):
Swimming is fun. Playing golf is not my cup of tea.

(2) for “activities” (leisure activities, hobbies & chores)

e.g. Let’s go swimming.   I love playing volleyball.   I’m in charge of taking the dog for a walk.

(3) After certain expressions / verbs:
-          avoid              You should avoid drinking coffee late at night.            vermeiden
-          admit             He admitted stealing the money.                                    zugeben
-          be busy         I was busy cleaning the house when you called.          beschäftigt sein
-          can’t help      I can’t help falling in love with you. (Elvis)                     nicht anders können
-          can’t stand    I can’t stand waiting for the bus.                                     nicht ertragen können

-          consider        He is considering moving to Spain.                                 in Betracht ziehen (think about)
-          deny              He denied stealing the money.                                       leugnen

-          fancy (2)        I really fancy having a cup of tea now.                           Lust haben (feel like)
-          feel like         I really feel like having a cup of tea now.                       Lust haben (fancy)
-          finish              Please finish writing now.                                                 beenden, aufhören (stop)
-          forgive           Forgive my interrupting.                                                   vergeben, entschuldigen (excuse)
-          hate               I hate waiting for the bus.                                                 hassen
-          have               I had difficulty in finding a place to park.                       Schwierigkeiten haben.
