GRAMMAR FOCUS: TENSES (Present Perfect / Past)
- song: "Living next door to Alice"
- grammar: PRESENT PERFECT (have been + "ing") & PAST TENSE "used to"
We use Present Perfect Tense (have + 3rd form or have been + "ing") to describe a situation that has been going on ALL THE TIME
For 24 years I've been living next door to Alice.
You know, I've been waiting for 24 years.
We use Past Tense (2nd form) to describe a situation that is OVER.
We grew up together, two kids in the park.
We carved our initials deep in the bark.
When we want to express that something was DIFFERENT IN THE PAST, we can use "used to + verb"
Alice and Peter used to play in the park as children, but now Alice is a student and Peter is a baker.
Alice used to live next door to Peter, but now she's moved away.
Homework:
- Write 3 sentences in PRESENT PERFECT (I've been + ing) & 3 sentences with "used to" about your life.
Smokie – Living Next Door
To Alice
Sally called when
she got the word
And she said: "I suppose you've heard about Alice"
Well, I rushed to the window and I looked outside
And I could hardly believe my eyes
As a big limousine rolled up into Alice's drive
I don't know why she's leaving, or where she's gonna go
I guess she's got her reasons
And she said: "I suppose you've heard about Alice"
Well, I rushed to the window and I looked outside
And I could hardly believe my eyes
As a big limousine rolled up into Alice's drive
I don't know why she's leaving, or where she's gonna go
I guess she's got her reasons
But I just don't
wanna know
'Cause for twenty-four years
'Cause for twenty-four years
I've been living
next door to Alice
Twenty-four years just waiting for a chance
To tell her how I feel, and maybe get a second glance
Now I've got to get used to not living next door to Alice
We grew up together, two kids in the park
We carved our initials deep in the bark
Me and Alice.
Twenty-four years just waiting for a chance
To tell her how I feel, and maybe get a second glance
Now I've got to get used to not living next door to Alice
We grew up together, two kids in the park
We carved our initials deep in the bark
Me and Alice.
Now she walks through the door with her head held high
Just for a moment, I caught her eye
As the big limousine pulled slowly out of Alice's drive
I don't know why she's leaving, or where she's gonna go
I guess she's got her reasons
But I just don't
wanna know
'Cause for twenty-four years
'Cause for twenty-four years
I've been living
next door to Alice
Twenty-four years just waiting for a chance
To tell her how I feel, and maybe get a second glance
Now I've got to get used to not living next door to Alice
Sally called back and asked how I felt
She said: "I know how to help get over Alice"
She said: "Now Alice is gone, but I'm still here,
You know I've been waiting for twenty-four years..."
And then the big limousine disappeared...
I don't know why she's leaving, or where she's gonna go
I guess she's got her reasons
Twenty-four years just waiting for a chance
To tell her how I feel, and maybe get a second glance
Now I've got to get used to not living next door to Alice

next door to Alice
Twenty-four years just waiting for a chance
To tell her how I feel, and maybe get a second glance
But I’ll never get used to not living next door to Alice
No I'll never get used to not living next door to Alice
Twenty-four years just waiting for a chance
To tell her how I feel, and maybe get a second glance
But I’ll never get used to not living next door to Alice
