Today's lesson:

GRAMMAR REVISION Part II: "adjectives & adverbs"

- comparison of adjectives (book p 42 & 43)
- adjectives with "ing" and "ed" (book p 27)
- adjectives & adverbs (extra handout)

Homework:

Write 7 sentences: say why you are better than your brother /sister / neighbour... Use comparison of adjectives (I'm cleverer than my neighbour) / adjectives with "ing" / "ed" (My neighbour is boring) / adverbs (My sister drives carelessly)!

Example: I'm better than my sister because I speak English more fluently. I am a faster runner, and I drive more carefully...

Extra exercise:

- adjectives / adverbs

You can compare two things/persons/... using adjectives in two ways:

1) (not) as ... as

I'm as tall as my best friend.
My car is not as fast as your car.

2) more ... than / (comparative) + than

She is more beautiful than her sister.
A Fiat is cheaper than a BMW.

The comparative of adjectives is formed in the following way:

Short adjectives (1 syllable):

ADJECTIVE + er

cheap - cheaper
nice - nicer
safe - safer

Long adjectives (3 or more syllables):

more + ADJECTIVE

beau|ti|ful - more beautiful
ex|pen|sive - more expensive
con|ve|ni|ent - more convenient

Special case - adjectives with 2 syllables:

adjectives ending in "y", "le", "ow", "er" > short adjectives

happy - happier
gentle - gentler
shallow - shallower
clever - cleverer

all other endings > long adjectives

care|ful - more careful
use|less - more useless
com|plex - more complex

Adjectives describe people / things / places:

Pete is carefulPete is a careful driver.
Rome is beautiful. Rome is a beautiful city.

Adverbs describe verbs (how you do something):

Pete drives carefully.
Gina speaks English well.
