BFI A2.3 - Lesson of Monday, 10 March

Sorry - there was a mistake with the update yesterday... so here's the correct update!

What we did today:
- Vocabulary: clothes (SB p. 39; extra sheet - see below)
- Revision: Gerund ("ing") or Infinitive (to)

Gerund vs. Infinitive:

Rule I: before or after

We use "ing" for actions that happened before:
I will always remember dancing with her. (I danced with her before; I remember it now)
Please stop talking to your neighbour. (You talked before; now you must stop)

We use the infinitive for actions that will/should/might happen later:
Don't forget to lock the door. (Don't forget that you must lock the door later.)
I stopped to ask for the way. (I stopped. Then / later I asked for the way.)

Rule II: general or specific

We use "ing" for generalisations:
I like swimming. (I generally have a favour for it)
I prefer dancing to playing football. (Generally, in my opinion dancing is better than football.)

We use the infinitive for specific situations:
I'd like to drink some tea now. (Not generally, in this situation!)
I'd prefer to stay at home tonight. (Not every evening, just tonight!)

Rule III: <3

We use "ing" after the following words to say if we like/don't like something:

love (lieben)
like (mögen)
enjoy (gerne tun)
prefer (bevorzugen)

don't mind ("es macht mir nichts aus")

dislike (nicht mögen)
hate (hassen)
detest (verabscheuen)
can't stand (nicht ausstehen können)
